Around Taipei – Roxy Rocker

One of the Roxy siblings, Roxy Rocker is a basement venue with 2 large rooms: a CD packed room and an exclusive vynil room accessible via a heavy glass door. The glass wall dividing the two spaces works to enlarge and unite the dark basement rooms and works as an effective sound barrier between them. Two DJs spin tunes of your choice, mixing in their own choices to bridge what eventually becomes a highly eclectic mix. Going from one room to another is an exercise in sensory sensitivity, having one song blasting behind you battling, sometimes in utter nonsense, the other room’s explosive sounds; the winner chosen by which side of the glass door you side with.

The vinyl room has a far wall with thousands of vinyls organized in A-Z order with a smaller side cabinet dedicated to electronic music. Pull a vinyl or pull a few, give ’em to the DJ, tell ’em what track, and just relax to the other personally selected tunes. Behind the DJ, a large screen scrolls through the selections and their accompanying lyrics (when available). The room has limited seating, most are 2-3-4 tall stools around small round tables that barely hold a few drinks on the top. There’s one large couch perfect for groups of friends to just lay back, relax and have a drink.

Now, as for selecting music, don’t be intimidated by the vast selection in front of your eyes. Just narrow the shelves down to a row or column and just grab a CD/vinyl. If you know it, think about playing it. If you don’t, you can just put it back and perhaps if it seems interesting, give it a shot. The other option is to just kick back and enjoy everyone else’s grand mix.

Personal thought:
Going there feels like you just got access to that one friend’s cool older brother’s room who happens to have the biggest selection of vinyl and CDS outside of indie record stores. The best part is that he’s encouraging you to check out his collection, letting you just plop down on the floor while you peruse at your own leisure, stashing a small pile next to you for him to play at your request.

That’s what it felt like to me. And boy did I make a million requests. Sorry.
